Penguin Suica Card Sales Are Ending—Suica Itself Is Staying

Penguin-design Suica card sales end as local stocks run out. Here’s what changes—and how to choose a physical card or Welcome Suica Mobile.
The penguin design is being discontinued, not Suica itself. JR East announced on August 26, 2026 that sales of penguin-design Suica cards will end when stock runs out at each sales point. Character-free cards will follow. There is no single nationwide last-sale date, so March 2027 is not a deadline until which you can count on buying the penguin version. JR East’s announcement
For a Tokyo trip, the decision is straightforward: seek a regular physical Suica if the penguin card matters as a souvenir; otherwise, choose your IC card by phone compatibility, trip length and refund rules.
Status as of October 26, 2026.
What ends—and when?
Two separate changes are involved:
- Penguin-design card sales: end locally as each sales point exhausts its stock; physical Suica sales continue with a character-free design.
- The mascot’s role: ends on March 31, 2027, with its successor taking over on April 1.
JR East unveiled three replacement candidates and opened voting on September 8, 2026. Voting closed September 23; the winner is scheduled to be announced on November 18, 2026. You do not need to wait for that result to arrange Tokyo transport. Card-design notice · Mascot timetable
Already have a penguin Suica? The announcement concerns new-card designs, not a shutdown of existing cards. Regular Suica remains subject to its normal validity rule: it becomes invalid after ten years without use. JR East’s Suica guide
Which option fits your Tokyo trip?
Regular physical Suica: for the penguin or future visits
Adult regular Suica cards are sold at JR East multifunctional ticket machines and ticket offices. Bring yen: ordinary bank credit cards are not accepted for purchase. A ¥2,000 purchase includes a ¥500 deposit and ¥1,500 usable balance; other purchase amounts are available. Ask staff whether penguin-design stock remains before buying; availability at one location does not establish availability elsewhere. Purchase rules
Regular Suica is useful if you want to retain a card for later visits. Top-ups are cash-based. Returning a JR East-issued card to JR East refunds the deposit and remaining balance, less a handling fee of up to ¥220 from the balance—but you surrender the card, so do not return it if you want the souvenir. Welcome Suica Mobile: for a compatible iPhone
This visitor app avoids a physical-card purchase and supports top-ups through Apple Pay. JR East lists iPhone XR/XS and later with iOS 17.2 or higher as compatible. Users must be 13 or older and register an eligible payment card in their own name with Apple Pay. There is no deposit, but the balance expires 180 days after the initial top-up and is non-refundable. Download before departure and enable location services; country restrictions may prevent issuance or top-up until you reach Japan. Compatible devices · App rules · Setup guidance
Do not assume an overseas Android phone can use this app now. JR East’s overseas Samsung Galaxy expansion is planned for the first half of 2027, with models and regions still to be specified. Samsung announcement
Physical Welcome Suica: for a short trip without the app
Physical Welcome Suica is a separate visitor product, not the regular penguin card. It has no deposit, lasts 28 days including purchase day, and offers no routine balance refund. Top-ups require yen cash. Keep the reference paper issued with the card and show it to staff if requested.
Airport vending machines are listed at Narita Terminal 1, Narita Terminal 2·3 and Haneda Terminal 3’s Tokyo Monorail station. Central-city sales points include JR EAST Travel Service Centers at Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro and Ueno. Sales locations and conditions
