Shibuya’s Covered Route Between Scramble Square and Hikarie

Mina Kuroda · 3 min read

Choose the right rail gate, use the second-floor passage between Scramble Square and Hikarie, and know when the underground route is simpler.

Use the second-floor connecting passage to walk between Shibuya Scramble Square and Shibuya Hikarie without descending to street level. If you arrive on the underground Tokyu or Tokyo Metro lines, however, use the direct building connection—B6 for Scramble Square, B5 for Hikarie—rather than climbing to the elevated passage just to reach one building. This is a covered alternative to a street crossing, not a guarantee of a completely enclosed journey. Tokyo describes the link as an indoor deck, while Shibuya Ward classifies the passage as semi-outdoor. Keep an umbrella available in wind-driven rain. Between the two buildings: stay on 2F

From Scramble Square, go to 2F and head toward Shibuya Hikarie via the connecting passage, rather than taking stairs down toward the street. For the reverse journey, use Hikarie’s 2F connecting passage toward Scramble Square and the station. Tokyo identifies this as the second-floor link between the two buildings; Hikarie also lists the passage as its direct connection to JR and the Keio Inokashira Line. The useful distinction is 2F connecting passage, not simply “Hikarie Deck.” The separately named Hikarie Deck runs above the Ginza Line at Hikarie’s third- and fourth-floor levels toward Miyamasuzaka; it is not the second-floor link described here. Hikarie Deck layout

Choose your approach by rail line

The gate choices and turns below are Scramble Square’s published directions to Scramble Square, not directions to Hikarie. Once there, use the 2F passage if Hikarie is your next stop. Official rail-access directions

Arrival line Gate and direction to Scramble Square Which connection to use
JR lines Choose Central Gate, then head toward the East Exit / Scramble Square. Scramble Square also lists South Gate as an approach. For this elevated route, aim for the 2F Hikarie connection, rather than continuing down to the street.
Keio Inokashira Line After leaving the gate, head toward Shibuya Hikarie. Hikarie’s official access uses the 2F connecting passage; follow the building signs through the station connection.
Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Use the Scramble Square-direction gate and turn left. Reach Scramble Square, then use its 2F link if visiting both buildings.
Tokyu Toyoko / Metro Fukutoshin From Shibuya Hikarie 1 Gate, turn right; from Hikarie 2 Gate, turn left. Follow B6 for Scramble Square. For Hikarie alone, follow B5 instead of detouring upstairs.
Tokyu Den-en-toshi / Metro Hanzomon Use Miyamasuzaka Central Gate and turn left. Choose the underground building connection: B6 for Scramble Square or B5 for Hikarie.

Hikarie publishes a direct 1F connection from the Ginza Line. If Hikarie is your only destination, follow its station signs rather than routing through Scramble Square solely to use the bridge. Hikarie access

Where the passage stops helping

The elevated link solves the short move between these two buildings and their station connections. It is not a covered route to every Shibuya attraction. For Hachiko, the scramble crossing or a wider neighborhood walk, switch to the relevant exit in the Shibuya station-and-day-route guide.

For early-morning or late-night travel, check posted access signs rather than treating it as a 24-hour route: the ward’s passage listing does not specify pedestrian opening hours. Shopping and parking hours are not a timetable for the connecting passage. Passage listing

What changed in October 2026?

Tokyo’s October 26, 2026 notice concerns greening of the existing second-floor passage—not a newly opened connection. The published greening period is October 22, 2026–February 22, 2027. Look for the 2F connecting passage between Scramble Square and Hikarie, not a new bridge or a higher-floor deck. Dated notice · Project dates
