Visit Hamarikyu Gardens, then walk to the Takeshiba waterfront

Mina Kuroda · 5 min read

Plan Hamarikyu Gardens with hours, admission, station exits, wheelchair information and a compact walk to the Takeshiba waterfront.

For a compact garden-and-waterfront outing, enter Hamarikyu through Otemon Gate, explore the tidal pond and island teahouse, then leave through Naka-no-gomon Gate for WATERS takeshiba. Budget about 2½–3 hours for the garden, an optional tea stop and a waterfront pause.

Hamarikyu’s defining feature is Shioiri-no-ike, a pond fed by seawater from Tokyo Bay, with sluice gates regulating its tidal flow. The former Tokugawa shoguns’ garden combines that waterside landscape with a high-rise backdrop. It is a useful choice when you want a Japanese landscape garden within a central Tokyo day, rather than a separate cross-city excursion. Official garden guide

Hours, admission and tickets

Checked 11 October 2026.

Detail Normal arrangements
Opening hours 9:00–17:00; last admission 16:30
Regular closures 29 December–1 January; normally open on Mondays
General admission ¥300
Age 65 and over ¥150; bring proof of age
Children Elementary-school age and younger free, with a guardian; middle-school students living or attending school in Tokyo also free

These are the operator’s published admission details; its garden FAQ confirms Monday opening. Check the main page’s notices before travelling in severe weather, when temporary closures are possible.

For an ordinary visit, buy admission at the gate. Online purchase is optional: the linked Webket shop sells date-specific tickets and requires login or registration. Choose the intended visit date in the official ticket shop.

Aim to enter by 15:00 for an unhurried afternoon circuit. The operator estimates one to 1½ hours to walk around the garden; tea adds time. Visit-duration guidance

Autumn 2026 exception: on 21–23 October and 30 October–3 November, opening extends to 21:00, with last entry at 20:30, for the moon-viewing and anniversary events. Normal admission applies, but Naka-no-gomon closes at 17:00, so evening visitors must use Otemon. Some areas are restricted after 17:00, and wheelchair users cannot use some sections. The teahouse’s daytime service ends earlier during these periods and is closed during the day on 31 October and 1 November; evening service runs 17:00–20:30, last order 20:00. Official event notice

Choose the station and gate before travelling

The nearest station is not always worth an extra train change. If your train already reaches Shimbashi, the longer walk can be simpler than transferring to Shiodome.

Arrival Gate to aim for Operator’s walking guidance
Tsukijishijo, Toei Oedo Line, A1 exit Otemon About 7 minutes
Shimbashi, JR, South Gate → Shiodome Exit Otemon About 12 minutes
Shiodome, Toei Oedo Line, exit 10 Naka-no-gomon About 5 minutes
Shiodome, Yurikamome, East Exit Naka-no-gomon About 5 minutes

The operator’s surface-access map identifies these exits; the main garden page gives the gate-specific walking times. Treat them as street-walk guidance, not platform-to-ticket-window timings.

For wheelchairs and strollers: do not assume the shortest numbered exit is the step-free route. The garden recommends its surface-access plan and publishes a barrier-free map, updated February 2026, showing route widths and slopes. Use the mapped passable paths rather than assuming every bridge or hill is accessible. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the admission window; ask staff on arrival. Garden accessibility information

A garden route that finishes on the waterfront side

Use the official English garden map to connect these stops:

  1. Otemon and the old pine. Start with Sambyakunen-no-matsu, the spreading pine traditionally associated with renovations under the sixth shogun. Add the flower field if that is part of your reason for visiting.
  2. The former duck-hunting grounds. The ponds, narrow channels and observation openings explain a historical use of the garden beyond ornamental scenery.
  3. Shioiri-no-ike and Nakajima-no-ochaya. Make the tidal pond the main stop. The island teahouse serves matcha and Japanese sweets for an additional charge—not a full lunch. Normal hours are 9:00–16:45, last order 16:30; the autumn event exceptions are above. Teahouse hours
  4. Naka-no-gomon exit. Finish at this gate for the Takeshiba pairing rather than returning to Otemon.

If flowers are the deciding factor, check the year’s notices. For 2026, the garden has adjusted planting to target peak yellow cosmos from late September to mid-October and says there will be no pink or white cosmos this year. That is a planting plan, not a guarantee of peak bloom on your visit date. 2026 cosmos notice

Pair it with WATERS takeshiba

After leaving Naka-no-gomon, follow the streets outside the garden toward WATERS takeshiba, 1-10-30 Kaigan. This is a separate waterfront complex overlooking Hamarikyu, not an adjoining garden exit or a continuous path through the grounds. As a planning allowance, set aside another 30–45 minutes for the walk and a pause by the water. Garden area map · WATERS location and access

The plaza permits food, including food you bring yourself; take your rubbish away. Atre Takeshiba supplies café and restaurant options, with general hours of 11:00–22:00, though individual shops differ. Multipurpose toilets are in the Theatre Building on floors 1 and 2 and the Tower Building on floor 1. Plaza rules · Facility hours · Visitor facilities

For the return trip, WATERS is about 6 minutes from Hamamatsucho’s North Exit, 7 minutes from Daimon exits B1/B2, or 3 minutes from Takeshiba station’s B2 exit. Choose the station serving your next destination rather than automatically walking back to Shimbashi. These are ordinary walking routes; the published Takeshiba B2 directions use stairs. Official access directions Takeshiba also has elevators between street, ticket-gate and platform levels; use those rather than the stair directions if needed. Yurikamome station information

If shopping is the priority instead, leave Hamarikyu through Otemon and use our Ginza shopping and architecture walk for the next part of the day.

Boat arrival: useful, but not a departure plan

Tokyo Cruise currently marks Hamarikyu as disembarkation-only: you cannot board there to continue to Hinode or Asakusa. This makes the boat an optional arrival from Asakusa, not your transport out of the garden. Operator’s Hamarikyu pier notice

The Asakusa–Hamarikyu journey is listed at about 35 minutes. This route does not accept advance reservations; tickets are sold only at the Asakusa boarding point’s ticket machines. Buy specifically for Hamarikyu—a Hinode ticket does not allow you to disembark there—and check the current timetable and day’s operating information before setting off.
