Choose the Right Aquarium for Your Tokyo Route

Mina Kuroda · 5 min read

Compare five Tokyo aquariums by adult admission, nearest station, visit length and neighborhood fit, from Skytree and Ikebukuro to Shinagawa.

Sumida Aquarium is the best fit for an Asakusa–Skytree day, Sunshine Aquarium for Ikebukuro and Maxell Aqua Park for a short stop near a major rail hub. Choose Tokyo Sea Life Park for the lowest adult price and a conventional large-aquarium visit; choose Shinagawa Aquarium for a lower-cost traditional option in southern Tokyo.

Pick your day’s area and priority; the tool will recommend the most practical aquarium.

Route fit takes priority when you already know where the rest of your day will be.

Sumida Aquarium

It sits inside Tokyo Skytree Town and adds little travel to an Asakusa–Skytree day.

Price and routing caveats
  • Sunshine Aquarium admission varies by date.
  • Shinagawa Aquarium is not at Shinagawa Station.
  • Tokyo Sea Life Park requires the JR Keiyo Line and is best treated as a half-day outing.
  • Published hours and closures should be checked for the visit date.

Sumida Aquarium Fits an Asakusa–Skytree Day

Choose Sumida Aquarium if Tokyo Skytree, Solamachi or Asakusa is already in your plan. The aquarium occupies floors 5 and 6 of Tokyo Skytree Town, requiring little additional travel once you are in the area.

The compact indoor layout includes penguins, jellyfish and an Ogasawara-themed exhibit representing Tokyo’s distant islands. It works particularly well when you want an aquarium without committing most of the day to a separate excursion.

Adult admission is ¥2,700. The aquarium is next to Tokyo Skytree Station and a five-minute direct walk from Oshiage Station. Its official calendar and access page showed 10:00–20:00 on most weekdays and 9:00–21:00 on most weekends and holidays in September 2026. Entry ends one hour before closing, and hours vary by date.

A practical route is Sensoji in the morning, lunch in Asakusa and then either a walk or a one-stop ride on the Tobu Skytree Line. Finish at the Skytree observation decks if visibility is good. The aquarium and tower require separate tickets; this Tokyo Skytree visit plan explains the tower entrance.

Allow about 1.5–2 hours for the aquarium itself. Add more time if you plan to eat or shop inside Solamachi.

Tokyo Sea Life Park Offers the Lowest Adult Price

At ¥700 for adults, Tokyo Sea Life Park is much cheaper than the commercial aquariums compared here. Children through sixth grade enter free, while junior-high students pay ¥250. The official visitor page lists the prices, 9:30–17:00 hours and the usual Wednesday closure. When Wednesday is a national or substitute holiday, the park closes the following day instead.

Its headline exhibit is a school of Pacific bluefin tuna in a 2,200-cubic-meter tank. The aquarium also reports more than 500 species and one of Japan’s largest penguin exhibits in its official overview.

The trade-off is location. Tokyo Sea Life Park is a five-minute walk from Kasai-Rinkai-Koen Station, about 20 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Keiyo Line. At Tokyo Station, allow extra time for the long walk to the underground Keiyo Line platforms; the Tokyo Station guide explains why a tight transfer is unwise.

Allow 2–3 hours inside and pair the visit with Kasai Rinkai Park. It is less suitable as a quick stop between central neighborhoods.

Tokyo is building a replacement aquarium beside the existing facility. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government timetable schedules it to open in September 2028. The present aquarium will close in connection with moving the animals, but a detailed closure date has not been announced.

Sunshine Aquarium Works Best With Ikebukuro

Sunshine Aquarium makes sense when your day already includes Ikebukuro’s shops, entertainment venues or Sunshine 60. Its rooftop setting and city views distinguish it from a conventional ground-level aquarium, with penguins, sea lions and otters among the attractions.

Adult admission varies by date from ¥2,600 to ¥3,200. Entry may be restricted on weekends, holidays and specified busy dates, so reserve a timed ticket when the rest of your itinerary is fixed. Hours also vary; use the official ticket calendar instead of assuming a standard closing time.

For the simplest rainy-day approach, take the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line to Higashi-Ikebukuro, use exit 6 or 7 and follow the connected underground passage into Sunshine City. From Ikebukuro Station, use exit 35 and walk along Sunshine 60 Street.

Inside the World Import Mart Building, take the dedicated aquarium elevator from the first floor to the rooftop on the 10th floor. The official access page maps both approaches.

Allow 1.5–2.5 hours. Higashi-Ikebukuro is usually the calmer approach when avoiding rain or the busiest streets around Ikebukuro Station matters.

Maxell Aqua Park Is Easiest From Shinagawa Station

Choose Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa for illuminated jellyfish displays, a tunnel tank and scheduled dolphin performances built around light, music and water. It is inside the Shinagawa Prince Hotel complex, about a two-minute walk from Shinagawa Station’s Takanawa Exit, making it the easiest option for a Shinagawa transfer or a show-led evening visit. The official access page shows the station approach.

Admission is ¥2,800 for adults, ¥1,300 for elementary and junior-high students, and ¥800 for children aged four or older. From September 24 through October 31, 2026, published hours are 10:00–20:00, with final entry at 19:00. Check the official hours and fees page for your date.

Program times change, so inspect the daily schedule before choosing an entry time if the dolphin performance is central to the visit. Allow 2–3 hours when building the day around a show; a shorter visit is possible when the aquarium is simply filling time before a train or hotel check-in.

Shinagawa Aquarium Is Not at Shinagawa Station

Despite the name, Shinagawa Aquarium is not beside Shinagawa Station. It is in a public park, an eight-minute walk from Omori-Kaigan Station on the Keikyu Line. Maxell Aqua Park is the aquarium beside Shinagawa Station; Shinagawa Aquarium is farther south.

The aquarium has a 22-meter tunnel through a 500-ton tank and a conventional family-aquarium layout. General admission is ¥1,350. Published hours are 10:00–17:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing; it normally closes Tuesday and January 1. GO TOKYO lists the access, price and facility details.

Choose it over Maxell Aqua Park when lower admission and traditional exhibits matter more than immediate rail access or theatrical presentation. Allow 2–3 hours, plus the local journey from your Tokyo base.

The two Shinagawa-named aquariums are not interchangeable for routing. Confirm the full venue name before following station directions.

Let the Rest of the Day Decide

Crossing Tokyo for a marginally better aquarium usually costs more time than the difference between the exhibits is worth. Sumida belongs with Asakusa and Skytree, Sunshine with Ikebukuro, Tokyo Sea Life Park with Kasai Rinkai Park, and Maxell Aqua Park with Shinagawa Station.

Shinagawa Aquarium is the exception that requires careful name and station checking. It suits a southern Tokyo route but is not a convenient substitute for Maxell Aqua Park during a short Shinagawa transfer.

Planning Tokyo days by area usually saves more time than optimizing one attraction in isolation.
